Details on each event are listed below:

Monday, November 14, Young & Yonder

LIVING IN OBLIVION
(Tom DiCillo, 1995, USA)

Tom DiCillo’s hilarious satire of the motion picture business stars Steve Buscemi as a wildly optimistic director who must navigate the absurd reality of low-budget filmmaking. Cleverly employing virtually every technical gimmick in the movie trade, the film features an all star cast of indie film favorites including Catherine Keener, Dermot Mulroney, James Le Gros, and Peter Dinklage.

Monday, December 12, Young & Yonder
Focus on: Mise-en-Scene
IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK
(Barry Jenkins, 2018, USA)

Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) adapts James Baldwin’s 1974 novel chronicling two star-crossed lovers in 1970s Harlem. Gorgeously photographed, meticulously structured, and deeply resonant, Jenkins lyrically demonstrates how little has changed in the Black American experience over the past 50 years. The film was awarded Best Feature and Best Director at the 2019 Independent Spirit Awards and Regina King won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Monday, January 9, Cloverdale Performing Arts Center
Focus on: Cinematography
AFTER THE WEDDING
(Susanne Bier, 2006, Denmark)

When the manager of an orphanage in India travels to Copenhagen to pursue a new financial partnership, he discovers a life-altering family secret. Expertly crafted with surprising twists and turns, Susanne Bier’s riveting family drama exemplifies the best of New Danish Cinema. Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2006 Academy Awards.

Monday, February 13, Young & Yonder
Focus on: Editing
THE GRADUATE
(Mike Nichols, 1967, USA)

Ben, a young college graduate confused about his future, becomes involved with an older woman in one of movie history’s most famous love affairs. Featuring masterful cinematography, a legendary soundtrack by Simon & Garfunkel, and pitch perfect performances from Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft, The Graduate is widely considered one of the greatest films in movie history. Nominated for 7 Oscars, including a win for Best Director Mike Nichols.

Monday, March 13, Cloverdale Performing Arts Center
Focus on: Sound Design
I, TONYA
(Craig Gillespie, 2017, USA)

Director Craig Gillespie takes a darkly comedic approach as he tackles one of the most notorious and sensational scandals in sports history: the ill-conceived and poorly executed attack on Olympic ice skater Nancy Kerrigan. Told through multiple perspectives over a span of twenty years and accompanied by an expertly constructed soundtrack, I, Tonya offers humor, insight, and a great deal of empathy toward Tonya Harding, a working-class sports hero that everyone loves to hate. The film was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Actress for Margot Robbie and Best Supporting Actress for Allison Janney (who won as Harding’s mother).
