Synopsis: This simple romantic tragedy begins in 1957. Guy Foucher, a 20-year-old French auto mechanic, has fallen in love with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery, an employee in her widowed mother’s chic but financially embattled umbrella shop. On the evening before Guy is to leave for a two-year tour of combat in Algeria, he and Geneviève make love.

Love Note: Love can take many forms. In Jacques Demy’s The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, it lives on in memory, in absence and longing, in the small wound that time does not fully heal. It lingers in every vivid color, in every note of Michel Legrand’s soaring score. Few films capture so well that love is not measured by permanence, but by the depth of its imprint. Life may move on, yet something remains — dreamlike, luminous. And like all great films, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg makes us feel it. – The Umbrellas of Cherbourg was selected by Sofia Englund, food, wine, and entertainment editor of The Press Democrat.
